This seminar examines business valuations as they relate to family law, and the intersection with financial accounting. We also discuss the valuation methodology for asset-based valuations. Specific topics include:

  • Asset-based valuation approaches

Business Valuation 201

This seminar builds on what you learned in Business Valuation 101 and delves deeper in to the components of value. We also discuss the valuation methodology for earnings-based valuations. Specific topics include:

  • Earnings-based valuation approaches
  • The three main components of value
  • Common normalizing adjustments
  • Multiples and discount rates
  • Shareholders’ agreements

Contingent Income Taxes

Taxes play an important role in our daily life, and even more so when it comes to matters of family law. In this seminar we explore contingent income taxes and their role in family law. Specific topics include:

  • Understanding contingent income taxes
  • Sale of a corporation’s assets
  • Sale of a corporation’s shares
  • Discounting of contingent income taxes

COVID-19 and the Impact on Business Valuation and Income for Support

This seminar walks through the impact of COVID-19 on income available for support and business valuations in a family law context.  Specific topics include:

  • The use of hindsight information
  • Business forecasting
  • Valuation report disclosures
  • Income available for support impacts
  • Serra v. Serra

Executive Compensation Valuation

This seminar examines the basic types of executive compensation, with a focus on long-term incentive plans and how they relate to family law valuation and income for support reports. Specific topics include:

Family Trusts and Business Valuation

Financial Statements for Lawyers

This half-day seminar explores the world of accounting and its relation to family law, focusing on the different types of assurance engagements, the preparation of financial statements, and the importance of financial ratios when understanding your clients’ financial statements.   • Assurance and the three levels of financial statements
  • Balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow statements
  • Key notes and other disclosures within the financial statements

Income for Support 101

This seminar examines the complexities that arise when computing income available for support.  We discuss the Federal Child Support Guidelines and the impact on determining income available for support. Specific topics include:

  • Schedule III adjustments (adjustments to income)
  • Section 18 adjustments (adjustment to corporate pre-tax income)
  • Analysis of corporate working capital

Income for Support 201

This seminar builds on what you learned in Income for Support 101 and delves deeper into Section 18 and Section 19 adjustments of the Federal Child Support Guidelines. Specific topics include:
